Public Library Management Institute
The Tennessee State Library & Archives proudly sponsors the Public Library Management Institute, a long-standing and nationally recognized program that has served library leaders for more than thirty years. Designed specifically for directors and branch managers within the Tennessee Regional Library System (TRLS) who do not hold an MLS degree, the Institute offers a comprehensive, in-depth learning experience.
Participants in the Institute focus their attention on core areas such as management, leadership, and community engagement. The Institute's time frame allows for a deeper exploration of topics than is generally covered through the TRLS. This robust curriculum equips library professionals with the skills and confidence needed to lead effectively in today’s public library environment. Graduates earn a Public Library Management Certification, awarded by the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office, marking a significant professional achievement.
In addition to the Institute, a wide range of professional development opportunities is available to all library staff. These include the Summer Reading conferences, Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) training, and flexible virtual learning through platforms such as Niche Academy and WebJunction. Together, these offerings ensure that library staff across Tennessee have access to high-quality, ongoing training that supports excellence in service and innovation.
