NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett presented a $200,000 construction grant to the Newbern City Library on Friday as part of a massive renovation project aimed at improving the library’s facilities for the community. “This grant will be used to bring a state-of-the-art library to the citizens of Newbern. Patrons of the library will be excited to see the improvement in not only the facility, but in the ability to provide additional services to residents, “said Secretary Hargett. “I want to thank the state and local leaders for their dedication to supporting the library. We all know that strong libraries are essential to strong communities.”
The support of Newbern’s legislators, including Rep. Rusty Grills (Newbern), who joined Secretary Hargett for the presentation, was critical in advocating for additional grant funding from the state.
“Libraries play a central role in our communities by supporting education, literacy, and lifelong learning. I’m especially proud to see one of the largest library grants awarded in our state bring new life to the Newbern City Library, ensuring it continues to serve as a vital resource for generations to come. Thank you to Secretary Hargett for his support, and congratulations to the
local leaders who helped make this possible,” said Rep. Rusty Grills.
“Public libraries are cornerstones of our communities, opening doors to knowledge, workforce development and opportunity for all ages. This grant for the Newbern City Library will support critical improvements that ensure it remains a valuable resource for Dyer County residents for years to come,” said Sen. Ed Jackson (Jackson)
Secretary Hargett gave special thanks to Newbern Mayor Pam Mabry, City Alderman Tim Ware, Library Director Cecily Lovell, Library Board Chair Betty Jackson, library staff, and Chamber leadership.
The library was previously comprised of two adjoining buildings, one of which was condemned and unusable. This construction project will demolish the condemned building and thoroughly help rebuild and renovate both spaces combined as one.
