The files located in the Tennessee State Library and Archives Supreme Court Records represent a valuable resource for historical and genealogical research. Once a case is closed, and the retention period of 50 years is met, the files related to that case are transferred from the Tennessee Supreme Court to the Library and Archives. The content of the case files ranges from brief records to a complete summary of all the proceedings, sometimes involving hundreds of pages. Transcriptions of trial testimony from the lower courts, when they exist, appear in cases beginning in the late nineteenth century.
