NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Secretary of State Tre Hargett presented the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) Medallion Award to Laura Travis, Education Advocate and Founder of the “Let’s Tour 31” Program. The NASS Medallion Award recognizes individuals each year who demonstrate dedication to civic education, service to state government, and their community.
“Laura’s passionate work through the ‘Let’s Tour 31’ program she created reflects the values of service and civic engagement that the NASS Medallion award celebrates,” said Secretary Hargett. “It was a pleasure to honor Laura and her service with this prestigious award.” Mrs. Travis’ daughters, Jessica Shannon and Rachel Cates, shared emotional statements highlighting all the wonderful work their mother has done in opening the doors to Tennessee history and government for thousands of Tennesseans.
Those dedicated efforts have provided over 10,000 students and guests with more than 120 tours at the State Capitol, Tennessee Residence, Ellington Agricultural Center, Tennessee State Museum, and Tennessee State Library and Archives, giving these Tennesseans the opportunity to connect with the history, culture, and government of their home state.
Since 2013, Travis has also served as a docent for the Tennessee Residence, chaired the Rhea County Courthouse Restoration Task Force, and mentored students though the TN Achieves program. She also served on the Douglas Henry State Museum Commission for 10 years, before retiring in 2025.
