The Tennessee State Library and Archives is the official repository for records of the State of Tennessee, organized by department or other subgrouping. These Record Groups can consist of various types and formats of records generated by agencies in the performance of their duties. They are searchable in two ways: listings by department/agency and alphabetical listings .
Most Record Groups are available on microfilm and some finding aids are available online in .pdf format. Finding aids will generally include an agency history, a scope & content note, and a box or container list. You may also view current agency descriptions and histories in the Tennessee Blue Book.
Selected indexes to large and often-used state records have also been prepared by Library and Archives staff. These may be accessed by visiting the Indexes to Selected Record Groups page.
