In the War Between the States James J. Andrews and his men - Union soldiers - captured this engine at Big Shanty on the Western & Atlantic Railway and Attempted to burn bridges and cut the Confederate Army from its base of supplies. They were overtaken in the Great Locomotive Chase which ensued by the engine Texas which had been commandeered by the Confederate train crew of the General. Eight of the men captured were executed as spies, six paroled and eight escaped from prison. This story of Andrews Raiders and the Great Locomotive Chase is one of the most thrilling exploits of the War Between the States. A tablet at the Union Station tells the story of the raid." CHICKAMAUGA DAM, CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE – Started in 1936 this dam was completed in 1940 at a cost of $38,000,000. It is one of a series of dams built by the T.V.A. for navigation, flood control, and production of electric power on the Tennessee River. It is 129 ft. high and 5,794 ft. long with a reservoir area of 37,200 acres extending 59 miles upstream. In 1954 a new highway bridge over the dam was completed. This famous engine, which played such an important part in the Civil War, occupied a prominent place in the Union Depot. The 'General' was captured by 22 Federal soldiers in disguise, under the leadership of James J. Andrews, April 12, 1862; an attempt was made to escape with her, burn the railroad bridges and thus cut off the Confederate army's supplies, but the raid was unsuccessful and the engine was abandoned."

It is equipped with hot shower baths, rest rooms, grocery store, a lunch room, and cottages completely furnished. A room for two can be had at $1.50 per day. There are also outdoor camping grounds for those with their own tents. The rate for this is 50 cents a day. The camp is lighted each night. It is a small city in itself. 2020-143

Locomotive 4501, the engine that "started it all" in 1966, following purchase by P. H. Merriman from the K&T Railroad at Stearns, Kentucky. This 2-8-2 locomotive was the first of its kind to run on the Southern Railway, was sold to the K&T in 1948, and later pulled many SR passenger excursions after reconstruction in 1965. It was returned to TNVR in 1988, where it is now maintained for mainline excursion service. Erected at a cost of approximately $1,000,000. Concrete save for the middle span, which is a bascule lift. The Tennessee River from this point to Hale's Bar, 33 miles distant, is practically an inland lake. It is situated between two mountain ranges and is called by many the ""American Rhine."" This bridge occupies the site of a Military Bridge constructed by the Federals during the Civil War. The Military Bridge was washed away by high water a few years later. This suspension footbridge across the Chickamauga Creek on the Elise Chapin Wildlife Sanctuary, of the Chattanooga Audubon Society, Chattanooga, Tennessee, connects Wake Robin Hill with the Children's Wonderland. The sanctuary is composed of 124 acres, threaded by 24 wonderful nature trails. Over 130 species of native trees and shrubs and over 800 species of wild flowers grow on the property. The trails are open to the public the year round. It may be reached by Atlanta Highway 41, or the East Brainerd Road."
