Andrew's and his companions, who captured an Engine at Big Shanty on the Western & Atlantic Railway in an attempt to burn bridges and cut the Confederate Army from its base of supplies. There were overtaken; eight were executive as spies, six were paroled and eight escaped from prison. The famous engine 'The General' which was captured is kept as a Memorial in the Union Station at Chattanooga. A tablet tells the story of the raid." THS~

This famous engine was captured at Big Shanty, Georgia, a station on the Western and Atlantic Railway. "The Great Battlefield Line," on April 12th 1862 by Andrew's Raiders after an exciting chase by the train of the raiders were captured. The object of the raids into the Confederate lines was to burn the bridges on the Western & Atlantic R. R. and then cut off the Confederate army from its base of supply. The raid was one of the most daring exploits of the War and if it had been successful, would have proven most disastrous to the Confederacy. 2017-063

Concrete save for the middle span, which is a bascule lift. The Tennessee River from this point to Hale's Bar, 33 miles distant, is practically an inland lake. It is situated between two mountain ranges and is called by many the "American Rhine." This bridge occupies the site of the Military Bridge constructed by the Federals during the Civil War. The Military Bridge was washed away by high water a few years later. THS
