We strive to offer internship opportunities each semester around a three-track system: Library Track, Archives Track, or Discovery Track

THE LIBRARY TRACK is tailored for students pursuing a career in special or public libraries , with projects related to public library development, library administration, regional library services, library collection development, specialized library services for the print disabled, and operation of a robotic automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) for library materials. 

THE ARCHIVES TRACK includes projects in the areas of collection digitization, access tool development, archival collections development, document preservation, and operation of a robotic automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) for archival materials.

THE DISCOVERY TRACK is designed for students who wish to explore a wide range of work environments and projects within the fields of library and archival services.

Federal Documents Disposition Volunteer

Project Description: Library Collection Services is searching for a volunteer to create Federal Documents Offers lists to send to other depository libraries throughout Tennessee and the Southeast. Training will include the legal requirements of Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) discards, an introduction to the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) classification system, and an explanation of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) Disposition Database. The project may also include Inventory of U. S. Geological Survey maps not related to Tennessee that will be placed on the Federal Documents Offers lists. The inventory must contain detailed information about each map, including the title, map number, and date. This volunteer opportunity requires attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, a high level of accuracy in data entry, experience with Microsoft Excel, and some online research.

LABM Volunteer

Project Description: The Library for Accessible Books and Media (LABM) is seeking volunteers to help with updating metadata for library materials in order to increase access for patrons statewide. Tasks include locating book reviews and evaluating books directly to determine the degree of strong language, violence, and other types of content that some patrons wish to exclude or include when making book selections.

Qualifications: Applicants must be adept at online searching, basic word processing, and basic addition/subtraction. Attention to detail is crucial.

Time Frame: Ongoing

Work Schedule: To be determined

Location: This volunteer task can be performed on-site at the TN State Library & Archives facility or remotely. Remote volunteers will need access to a computer and the Internet.
